A Truth that Transcends Gifts, Games, and Festivities

Friday night, December 20th, My wife, MaryJo, had planned a special, intimate Christmas party for us and our two granddaughters, Jolena (9) and Joanie (6). Their mom and dad were attending a work Christmas party, so it was meant to be a fun evening just for the four of us. Grammy had prepared something festive and memorable for the girls!

But life threw us a curveball—Grammy came down with a terrible cold, which meant the plans had to change. I stepped in as the substitute host, and despite the unexpected twist, the three of us had a wonderful evening together. We enjoyed pizza, played games, watched a Christmas movie, and talked about everything under the sun. Before bed, I shared a special bedtime story, reading to them about Jesus, God’s greatest gift of love to the world.

John 3:16 might not be the first verse we associate with Christmas, but it beautifully reflects the heart of the season:

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

The giving of His Son began with the birth of Jesus, who came to give His life as a ransom for our sins.

This is the essence of Christmas—a truth that transcends gifts, games, and festivities. It’s the good news that God’s love came down to earth in the form of a Savior. It reminds us that true love isn’t found in human traditions but in the eternal gift of salvation through Christ.

So this Christmas, cherish your family traditions, but don’t forget the greatest tradition of all: God’s love, given to us through His Son. That is the Good News we celebrate, and it’s for everyone. Be sure to include Jesus and His love in your gatherings with family and friends this season.

Merry Christmas!

May God bless you and your loved ones,

Bill & MaryJo Keith
